need advice on lenses

heya folks
I just bought a minolta slr and tried a few shots of my snakes and cats and general landscapes the usual :) anyway after I got them developed I noted the usual mistakes but I also got a few decent pics but I couldnt get those close up head shots, My western hognoses are little things, so what I want to know is should I buy a telephoto zoom lens of say 70-210 to get those close in pictures and does it need macro capability, Im still pretty new to this photography stuff so dont throw a lot of jargon at me :)
