Painted in NC

A friend of mine found a Painted turtle in NC and they are illigal there so she asked me if I could find out where she can take it. Is there a place that takes in turtles in NC? She said it looks as if it was a pet before and she does not want to let it go back where she found it because she does not think it can fend for itself. Thanks in advance for any help.
