Need ID assistance

I live in S. California - Orange County. My daughter and her friend found a small newt this afternoon - it does not appear to match the descriptions or pics I've found of CA Newts, or Firebelly... I'm hoping you can help me, here's it's description:

*Very small - Under 2" in length
*DARK brown, possibly with darker (black?) side stripes
*Belly color same as rest of body
*Found "under a rock"

Any assistance you can offer, SOON, will be appreciated. I had newts as pets when I was a child, and will let them keep this, providing I can find out what kind it is, it's level (if any) of toxicity, and how we can properly care for it.
