I accidentally tore into a nest of pinkies in a bale of hay once. Since it was too late to do anything else, I fed one live to my tiger sal, then froze the rest, and fed them, thawed, one at a time over several weeks. Didn't seem any more cruel than just letting them die where they were. He loved them! I fed his regular foods in between (crickets or worms) and just subbed a pinkie once in awhile. He's about 10 inches long and these were really newborn so I figured they didn't have any real bone structure yet. I don't think I would feed pinkies very often, though.
