Sound like you're pretty well set, but don't forget a lid! Even though newts don't look like good climbers, they can use their slime as it dries to scale right up glass walls! They will especially try to escape new cages. A mesh lid (so that the cage will still 'breathe') is perfect!

: I'm new to this whole owning a newt thing (hence the handle Newtbie). Anyway, friday night i purchased a firebellied newt, I think hes japanese, anyway i took him home, converted my little 1 gallon tank into a half water terrarium thingly quickly. I put him in and noticed he didnt like the water. He would crawl on the little pile of gravel near the top and hang out there. Well, yesterday I did some web searching and realized he probly wanted more land so I reorganized the tank with adequate land and water depth, hieght, including proper filtration. Well its now sunday and I've tried feeding him, and he wont eat, I got those floating turtle/newt food sticks, ReptoMin. I got that food cuz thats what the store was feeding the newts. I've tried several methods of feeding him, using forceps, dripping water on him from the food, and he just will move away from it. The store I said I have 48 hrs. to return him or the food, well the 48 hours is up but they might let me take him back after school tomorrow. I asked my mom to look tomorrow for some Live tubifex or Bloodworms in a last attempt to feed the newt. I am kinda worried that he might die, what should I do? P.S. once i get the digital camera powered up i will take soem photos of the tank and him.
