Actually, I'd say most people DO prefer gravel. I'm not one of them. Your statement "maintenance is a little more intensive" sums up my feelings perfectly. After 17 years of keeping newts, I've learned to take any safe shortcut I can find, and having no gravel is one of them.

In those tanks where I do (or did) have gravel or pebbles, I always kept a portion of the bottom w/o gravel, and put the food there. The newts have an easier time finding it (and less food rots) when it doesn't fall between the cracks.
