Watersnake - upstate NY

Last year right before winter, as i was walking through my family's property upstate NY i heard a rattling sound from within the bushes near the swamp. I froze, and looked around for the snake... Until well, i actually saw this beautiful watersnake sticking its head out of the grass by the swamp. When i tried to approach it very slowly, the snake just took off into the swamp, and though i tried to outsmart the snake, i was the foreign there and that beauty escaped... I couldn't see much of it but it's head... it was brown, with some darker brown/black blot pattern. Can anyone post a picture here if you know the exact type of snake i'm talking about? Any way i could have brought it from there to take a look at it?
Thanks,
Gonz
