Actually there are quite a few natricines that inhabit New York. Eastern Garters, Ribbons, Short headed garters, Brown Snakes, Red Bellied Snakes, Queen Snakes, Northern Waters and two kinds of Earth Snake just to name a few.

Sounds like a typical watersnake. Sipedon is pretty much all that is up there anyway natrcine wise. The temperment sounds about on par as far as Nerodia go. Most are really nasty, but some never bite. Can't say their bite is without pain...it hurts pretty well and bleeds alot. Andy
