Size and body shape tends to play a part as well. Most garters are shorter, rarely exceeding two to three feet and are extremely thin. Water snakes tend to be heftier and can reach lengths of over 5 ft (although those are MONSTER sized). They are both in the same sub family of Natricines, including Thamnophis, Nerodia, And Natrix. I believe some water snakes were actually known as Natrix a while back. Andy
