Stress kills - people too, so take a deep breath and relax. He was probably carrying a load of something that "stress" may have exacerbated. Listless implies an event; stroke or maybe parasite over-burden. Stroke is'nt likely so ... if he was so far gone as not to seek shelter, de-bugging may well have killed him out-right. One day we'll know everything.
