In Reply to: What are the bad effects of different foods on Bosc (Savannah) monitors. posted by Dale on August 31, 2000 at 07:06:53:
: No food presently available is "balanced" for monitors.
*I didn't claim that. Variety is always good*
: The bottom line is that no one food is perfect for a Bosc monitor. In the wild they do not eat just one "perfect" food.
*I agree with that, no need to tell me...*
Larger Bosc (Savannah) monitors can benefit by modest amounts of good quality canned dog food. Young monitors grow faster with some good quality canned cat food in addition to crickets and other insects.
*In his prev post "sky" suggested using mainly cat/dog food. I do not think that is a healthy diet, do you? When he asks for the bad effects of cat/dog foods I answer with my honest opinion.
Interesting factoid about mice being higher in fat than cat/dog foods. I wonder if it's always true. Probably depends on the food and the individual mice. I would guess that lab mice raised in small cages are higher in fat than mice which have the means to exercise. I have no means to test this, though I can think of several ways to set up an experiment. (It's not that critical, I'm just rambling.)
