The best way to sex them is to find eggs. =)

Beyond that, well...

Unless you've seen a lot of known male and female monitors, its all just guesswork. Because there's exceptions to all the signs.
Don't feel bad, there's not too many out there that can tell them apart. Some monitor species are dimorphic; the Odatria have spurs, and male albigs are said to be hung like a...male albig. I wouldn't know.
Monitors of both sexes evert .. things.., and both sexes mount or fight with, other lizards of the same or opposite sex. Size is not always an indicator, too. So, how to tell? You don't, right now. If you are observant, and do some research, the sex of yours will become clearer. Try doing a forum search, the little grey box is just above the top of the posts. Its been discussed a lot.

I too, really wanted the know the sexes of my lizards, its a people thing, I guess. But they have the same pet potential either way, so unless you have two of the same species, its not worth fretting over. Really.
Just pick a non-gender specific name, or you'll end up with a girl lizard with a boy name. Like me. =(
D.
