waterproof it with FRP or whatever or anything solid and non-toxic.

Wire will let heat and water escape, making it much more difficult to keep adequate temps and humidity.

I have very little ventilation in all of my enclosures, I have built ones with too much ventilation and the substrate dries out, you end up adding water often, and then you will typically get a smelly cold sludge deep in the substrate, not something a monitor will like to burrow into.
