It is a matter of how your read it...
: "Melanophores are dendritic cells that synthesize black and brown pigments known as melanin..." (p. 27-29)
I don't belive this implies that the pigments are either black or brown, rather that melanin is a pigment that can be described as brown or black, depending how much there is and on other factors, such as those elaborated on in the other statement.
