: I will be visiting Turkey in the latespring/early summer of 1999 and I am looking for legislation info regarding collecting and exporting small number of turtles/tortoises for my personal collection. Also, any info regarding exporters who could assist with this endeavor would be appreciated. I am not looking to strip the countryside of animals. I only want to bring back a few breeding groups for myself.

: Thanks,

Hi there Paul,

One part of my familie lives in Turkye so I come in Turkey
on a regular basis.

As you are talking about turtles and tortoises it is very
difficult or even ILLEGAL to traffic these animals.

Testudo greaca, Testudo marginata and Testudo hermanni, and
Testudo kleinmanni are I believe living there.
They are ALL LISTED ON THE CITES II APPENDIX
If you are a European resident it is illegal to import them!
If you want these animals buy C.B. ones.

As for turtles only the Emys orbicularis is protected by European Laws.
Amphibians;
Bufo bufo spp. Common Toad
Bufo viridis spp. Green Toad
Rana esculenta Green Frog
Rana ridibunda Giant Green Frog
Rana selona Small Green Frog
Hyla aborea European Tree Frog
Hyla meridionalis Mediteranian Tree Frog

Are ALL PROTECTED BY EUROPEAN LAWS!!

Only Hyla (aborea) savingyi is legal but it is
hard to identify them because the where a subspecie
of Hyla aborea!

As for Lizards all Lacertids of the Genus LACERTA are protected by European Laws
A lot of lizards living in Turkye have relatives in Europe and it is
really difficult to IDENTIFY them accordingly. If imported they will be confiscated!

For snakes:
Elaphe longisima
Elaphe quatorlineata
Elaphe situla spp.
ALL VIPER OF THE GENUS Vipera, Macrovipera.
Coluber jugularis
Coluber viridifalvis spp.
Coluber hippogondrionalis
Most of the Coluber spp. are also protected!
Coronella spp. Smooth Snake

The only snake that can be imported is Elaphe hohenackeri in the Northern part of Turkey

I hope I helped you enough!!

If you are going to import them make sure the papers are OK in the country of export and the country where the animals are being imported.

Make sure you got official papers and CITES papers, Healt Certificates etc.

Good Luck...
