Do we know that the different albino strains are completely different?

I was under the impression that there was this one chromosome with a little "albino gene" on it and that the reason the different albino strains did not "mix well" was because the different strains just kind of "screwed up" different sides/parts of the chromosome/albino gene. Are there several chromosomes that need to be/can be messed up to produce albinos? Or several Albino genes? I may have just made myself look like an idiot, but I really want to get a handle on all of this. Thanks all for the patience and though provoking posts :)
