In Reply to: Who here has lost a leo to impaction.... posted by Rick on January 16, 2003 at 19:08:55:
i have lost one to impaction, i just found out that at the bredders they had her on calci sand. i knew that it was sand impaction before then though because the night before she died she did pass some of it through. so i really wouldn't recomend it but if your vet has had no problems with it... i just know that i won't ever use it for any lizard becasuse that really sucks to lose on to impaction they get really skinny really fast.
sorry about my non capitals my shift doesn't work
:We hear a lot of lip service about how bad sand is but nobody really seems to have had any problems with it so far.
: My vet comes to our herp club a couple times a year with his slide shows and he's never had any leos die of sand that I know of. Most of his leo necropsies show impaction of Reptile bark, walnut shells and twigs because they are not digestible.
: I have had a female breeder die from vermiculite impaction and I've heard of one person that had a leo get impacted from that real fine ReptiSand because it clumps together. PlaySand and CalciSand do not do.
:It's a disservice to everyone that ever asks about it to just keep passing on the same rhetoric. One guy even posted that his vet recommended sand. Mine does, too.
: Anyone else actually know what they're talking about?
