Howdy Rick,
I was the guy who asked my vet about substrate and he told me that as long as the Leo was an adult, calci-sand was fine. I must admit I am definitely a newbie to Leos. I have cared for many reptiles in my life but never any Geckos until about a month ago when this Leo was given to me. I guess even vets and pet store owners cannot really reach an agreement about substrate. My local pet store here sells Leos and they are on this fluffy stuff that looks like it came out of a vacuum cleaner bag. They also feed their Leos a mix of crickets and veggies, and told me that Leos have the exact same diet as Bearded Dragons. I know this point to be false after reading up on care sheets for Leos.
I guess the bottom line for Leo substrate is whatever works for you and your Leo and whatever you are comfortable with is okay.
I think one point we all can agree on is, Leo Geckos are great reptile companions!!!
