In Reply to: Sand is by FAR the best substrate... posted by Rick on November 14, 2002 at 00:58:29:
leos love to DIG. anyone who doesnt use sand or soil likely has never seen a leo dig a burrow, or dig up half the cage for no other reason than the joy of moving earth around.
:Like ALL terrestrial animals, they do come in contact with sand.
: The finer grained sand can actually cause impaction by clumping inside the leo easier than a courser grained ones.
:Leos can rearrange the sand to better help them thermoregulate their enclosures. It distributes and holds heat the best. It's easily maintained. It can be spot cleaned much easier, it's more sanitary, it doesn't shred and become a hazzard to your leos, leos like it, and probably several more reasons I haven't mentioned.
: All my leos have probably eaten their share of sand, that's what they do. It's their natural instinct to lick sand. If it was so dangerous to them, they would have been extinct millions of years ago.
