This is a herp, and the date is 1997.
Again, ssp. is not necessary in the listing, because geographical range is restricted. Nevertheless, a Federal agency is using this nomenclature in current legislation. Regardless of the current thinking of taxonomists, the laws are being written by some agencies with subspecies. The law takes precedence in enforcement over the feelings of taxonomists.
Are you (in the collective sense) attempting to bring order on a professional level to this obvious lack of consistency by governmental agencies? As hobbyists, we're clearly not the authorities on nomenclature. Since Klauber, have any hobbyists published a description?
Would (hypothetically speaking) professionals and law enforcement agencies be more comfortable if hobbyists were to drop all subspecies and adopt the nomen 'cultivar'?
