: Does anyone know whether the California Herpetoculture Industry Advisory Committee (CHIAC) still exists as an active organization? Using a search engine, I've been able to locate a website (www.syspac.com/~varney/chiac.html) but it doesn't look like there has been an update for several years. There is an email address for the newsletter editor and phone numbers listed for two of the executive directors; one is no longer available. If no one knows, I'll send the editor an email or contact Gary Flanagan who is listed as the Director for the Northern California area. In addition to their obvious advisory capabilities, I wouldn't mind hearing an assessment about the impact (if any) the California rules have had on the wild populations of Lichanura in California.

Hi RP,
CHIAC actually had achieved what it was looking for. They were organized, they had a lawyer, money from donations, and many herpers backing them up. But it was mainly done by Brendon and Gary. They were the glue of CHIAC. I think you can get reasonable regulations, but I think you almost have to do it through court, or threat of going to court. The laws there are reasonable now. The size limit deal was a real problem, and that was taken care of. I hate to say this, because I am a member of NRAAC, but they did not approach it as well as CHIAC. Of course there were different circumstances. I don't know that NRAAC has the money to hire an attorney at this time. But the record keeping of captive bred offspring, who they were sold to, has really got me bothered. The government has no right to put its nose in peoples business when there is no need for it. This has nothing to do with conservation of the wild population. Now, records of wild caught animals being sold is a truly different story. Sorry RP, got a little carried away there. I would guess the shell is still there and ready to be used if needed. But I understand Gary has gotten out of herps. So maybe it is there for someone else to use. Calling Gary would be the thing to do though.
