Just the other day, when my indigos were hungry, but not getting fed, I walked into the snake room at night with a flashlight. I aimed it into one of the indigos cages. When the indigo moved, she saw her shadow and full on struck at it. There was NO rat scent other than what had been in there for the previous week. She was chasing shadows all over the place. The snake saw movement and struck at it. Total feeding response.
I'm convinced that indigos use both sight and smell for hunting, but that more than most other snakes, use the sense of sight and more specifically, their ability to sense motion, when hunting, to a much greater degree than a "typical" snake.
