I too have noticed the same behavior with my male couperi. I've always wondered why he doesn't see it right in front of him. I conducted a few "experiments" where with a prey item on tongs, I offer it to him and make him chase it. When feeding this way, he is always on target accurately following it. If I shake it in front of him and then drop it in his cage, he sometimes has a hard time locating it. I have also tried offering him prey, making him chase it and then placing it on a log (10" high)He would see me put it there, but once it is placed there it takes him some time to find it. My thoughts are that they are firsly visual hunters and use smell secondary. Don't know if this concludes anything, but this is my observation.
