Make sure the mice/rats you buy will be vacuum packed and sealed (not just squeezed into ziplocs). They last longer that way and don't freezer burn.
Consider the cost of shipping. It can be expensive. If you can find someplace that is reasonably close, it might be cheaper to pick them up than to have them shipped. (I used to get orders shipped to me on the Greyhound bus from one supplier. It only cost around $12 rather than the $25+ normal for shipping).
Good suppliers will make sure the mice aren't frozen together so that you can separate them without thawing them all.
Small packages are better than big (unless you have a lot of animals). You don't want to have to open a sealed package of 100 mice just to have to get one or two mice out.
I like the Mouse Factory in Alpine, TX, but there are lots of other good places.
