i keep mine in a 6' arboreal setup near a window and let it warm up to the high 80's at the top during the day. the snakes regulate themselves by moving up or down accordingly. they have a large water bowl [2 qts.] halfway up that they only daintily drink from. i have never seen them soak or get in the water. mine prefer live prey and then usually sleep off meals on horizontal branches well below the warmest areas.....i have to agree w/ pierson in that these are certainly not related to rat snakes and have always reminded me more of racers or coachwhips. they apparently have the same excellent eyesight and watch w/ great interest anything that is going on outside their tank even into other rooms. anything 'going on' inside the tank is immediately killed. lol. they are unsurpassed as display animals as they are large, gracefully active and rather beautiful. good luck w/ yours, hope this helped.
