:I think that for a first snake, they are too scary, messy, escape prone, eat too much and cost too much.

:For somebody with a few years experience with other snakes, they make a fantastic intermediate level snake.

:Hope this helps.

I would have to second Dougs statements above. Especially the escape proof part. We ALL have lost snakes in our time(My house is like the veritable bastillion for lost snakes) so it can happen to ANYBODY, regardless of skill level and aptitude. Still, it seems to me(My opinion only f.y.i.) that I and others seemed to lose a lot more snakes when we were still relatively new to the hobby. Aquariums with barbell plates weighing the tops down, screen tops with holes in them, Rubbermaid containers left not fully closed..all these things contributed to the mass exodus of snakes out of their cages and into our houses.

As such......loseing an Eastern Indigo is truly heartbreaking, not that loseing a corn or boa doesnt hurt, but Easterns COST SO MUCH and are so hard to come by(You cant just drop by your local pet shop and just pick them up) that to lose one is amajor setback. For this reason and this reason primarily,I would say that Eastern Indigos are definetly NOT beginners snakes and are more like intermediate and def advanced level snakes.

Add to that the cleanup(Daily)
and the nervous behaviour they exhibit
which doesnt lend itself well to display cages set in the middle of the living room with foot traffic running back and forth, and you have a snake that is better"Worked up to"
Please dont misconstrued what I am saying, with proper coaching, even a beginner can care for an Eastern Indigo, but all it takes is one slip up and you lose a snake that CANT easily be replaced.
Food for thought.....fodder for cud.......sardines for the cat...

I suggest that you take some time out, experiment with some more common snakes, make some huge mistakes with them, learn from your mistakes(Boy did I ever learn..ouch!) and then after trying some harder snakes, then advance to an Eastern Indigo. Timing is everything. Its like learning to drive and jumping into aFerrarir the first time you have drivers Ed. Think how many cars you'd hit? lol Take care and nest of luck to you.

Sincerely,

Fred Albury
