This may be an example of him chosing security over optimum temperature. It's really easy to check: Move the box to the cool side and the half coconut to the warm side. See where the snake spends his time.
In all of my cages, the hide box is on the cool side. The snakes will warm up to the prefered temps, then go back into the hide box, unless they are hungry, then they sit on top of the hide and strike anything that moves by :-)
