Here's something that I have noticed:
My 3.5 year old 6' Blacktail WILL NOT eat dead animals - even if "freshly killed" he will "bulldoze" the mouse around and if the mouse doesnt move - he will not eat it. I noticed this after I threw in his cage 3 thumped mice - One died instantly - the others still "kicked" around a bit. He bulldozed the dead one first, and after he noticed the others fluttering - he immediately went and INHALED the 2nd one - shortly after, he bulldozed the 3rd and as soon as that mouse started to move - he inhaled that one as well. He never went again and bothered with the first. Another thing - Ive left a dead mouse in his cage for 2 days before I discarded, my blacktail is definitely not a scavenger. I have fed live before, but with the mice being borderline EXTRA jumbo, why take the risk? Yeah, yeah - I know - 6' snake eating mice? I have had no luck transitioning to rats, babysitting 7 thumped Jumbo mice at a feeding? pain in the rear...
NOW my baby eastern is another thing - he is a year old - just over 2' long and INHALES anything I throw in his cage = dead, dying or alive. Is it a feeding pattern/habit these snakes develop? or shall I expect my Eastern to grow up to be a bulldozer as well? I will definitely find out in another 2 years...
