: How does Crypto find its way into your collection? Must it come in via new additions? How can one prevent crypto? How long should snakes be quarantined? Just some more questions after reading the great posts below.

: Thanks,

Dan,,
CRYPTO fins its merry way into your collection via the introduction of new specimens directly into your collection without a prolonged quarantine period. When I say prolonged I mean 6 months, and fi you really care about your snakes, those new quarnatined snakes get FECALS done on them dureing this period also.
Heres a story for you:
I went over a friends house the other day, he breeds ball python morphs. He has put a lot of money up for his morph projects, a lot invested.
Im not into balls, but I can understand passion.
So, he has all this $$ in it, and he IMPORTS about 25 w/c ball pythons...nice ones really...and he puts them in the SAME rack as his c/b MORPHS!!
This is an excample of bad quarantine, where 1 of those b/p's to have IBD, then the whole lot could potentially succumb to it.

Secondly, we invite crypto into our lives by being both LAZY and CHEAP. If your first snake doesnt accept the mouse, do you a)Toss it in the trash or b) Attempt to fee it to let another snake.
This is cross contamination, and spreads diseases like crypto and others.

Add to that one, do you use the same waterbowls for your snakes? We all have, but it is a REALLY bad practice. Water is a great enviornment for bacteria and pathogens to thrive in, moveing it from cage to cage is like ferrying the little monsters around...for free! Buy disposable cups, chuck them when they get dirty(Who wants to scrub bowls out anyway?)
And lastly, useing the same utensils in every cage to remove poop, or to scrape urates. Again...cross contamination.

One moe precaution, useing disposable rubber gloves EVERY time you go from cage to cage. They are cheap, and it is a hassle but so is a GIANT vet bill(Boy those vets make a lot of money!!lol)

I hope this helped answer some
of your questions. im sure there are
other precaustions, but these are
the ones I came up with a 8a.m

Fred
