I was feeding a young red chin male when something unexpected occured. He had just shed and I was feeding him within the tupperwear that I use for a humidity chamber for shedding purposes. His shed lay on the bottom of the tupperwear jumbled, but in one piece.
He took the first small mouse / large hopper with no problem, but he missed the second and received a mouthful of his own shed which he gobbled down to my suprise. I went to offer him the second mouse again and he ignored it and went straight for the rest of his shed. He then preceded to eat the rest of his shed not unlike a lizard generally does. After finishing the shed, he took 2 more small mice. I thought it was quite interesting and wanted to relate it to the rest of you.
Anyone else experience anything similar? My thoughts are just added protein. I am guessing a shed is made largely of keratin, not unlike our hair. Just thought it interesting.
Regards.
