: I'm an education intern at The Montgomery Zoo in Montgomery Alabama. My internship project since October 15, 1999 has been to spearhead the acqusition of an eastern indigo snake for the education department. Since October, I have been gathering as much information as possible about the eastern indigo snake. This week I wrote my 10 page paper on the natural history of the eastern indigo, it's status as a threatened species, the value of having an eastern indigo in The Montgomery Zoo education department, and the process of acquiring a threatened species. Tonight I presented the highlights of my paper at The Montgomery Zoo monthly docent meeting and showed some slides of eastern indigos, their familiar Colubrid relatives, their prey items in the wild, their natural habitat ect. Since we don't yet have our eastern indigo, an employee of Auburn University was kind enough to drive in for the meeting, bringing the Auburn zoology department's 5 year old eastern indigo, Travis with her. Travis had just finished shedding this afternoon before he arrived, and he looked great! Some of the braver docents and I even got to hold him. After some financial hurdles, our education department has finally struck a deal to purchase a 1997 male from Robert Sieb, a reputable breeder in California. We're sending our Interstate Commerce Permit application to Ken Graham in Atlanta on Monday. We're all looking forward to getting to know our new friend in the year 2000. Since I worked so much on this project, I have been given the honor of selecting a name for our eastern indigo. Since the synthetic form of indigo dye is still used today in some blue jeans, what do you think of "Denim" as a name?

: Congratulations on being able to get your Zoo that Indigo. I'm a keeper at Phila. Zoo and have done lots of educational programs. An Indigo should be great for them.
I've also done business with Robert Seib and am very satisfied with the snake I bought from him.IF I can scrape up some money after the Holidays, I'd like to get another!
Let me know how long it takes to get your permit now that the new guy has taken over at Fish and Wildlife.
Thanks and Good Luck,
Steve
P.S.- "Denim" is cool, or maybe "Levi"?
