I know boomslangs of Africa get well over 10’, but they are a deadly rear-fanged colubrid…and the are extremely slender so I’m not going to count them.
Spilotes pullatus may have the honor of being the longest non-venomous colubrid…they have been know to reach 13’…anyone know the record?
As far as OVERALL largest, I think the king is the yellow-tail cribo…at a FAT potential 10’.
This is just my 2 cents, but here’s how I’d rank the non-venomous colubrids in size:
1- Yellow-tail cribo: big, fat, and potentially 10’
2- All other indigos and cribos…all of these guys are heavy and can reach 9’
3- I’m giving the 3 spot to Spilotes for pure overall length…up to 13’, but too thin to get the #1 or 2 spot.
4- Bullsnake. Can reach 8’…big and bulky.
5- Other members of Genus Pitupohis…ok I’m a but vague here, but Northern Pine, black pine, and many of the other flavors can reach 7’ plus and are hefty
6- Coachwhip snakes…thin…but can get 8’+ in some instances.
7- Elaphae obsoleta…Black rat, yellow rat, grey rat in particular, all which can exceed 7’ easily, and have been know in rare instances to top 8’…medium girth.
8- Asiatic rat snakes…beauty snakes, red tail green rats and the like…ok…I’m getting very vague again here…and maybe these guys get bigger then #7…not sure here.
9- Lampropeltis getula getula and brooksi the eastern and s. Florida king snakes…at a chunky 6.5’
10- Racers…genus Coluber. Can top 7’, slender
Did I miss any big ones guys?
This has been one indigo forum opinion….what’s your opinion ??
