: Im truly torn between raising a black milksnake or an indigo Im just crazy about both But I want to go with one or the other.Whats the pros & cons of each?Which has the best temperment? Thanks for your advice
Brandon,
as a breeder of tricolors for over 10 years, 6 of them breeding black milks and raising Indigos for the last 3 with a first breeding this year, I'd have to say the more INTERESTING behaviors comes from Indigos. Black milks are much cleaner, do not get as large in respect to both girth and length, and are cheaper to maintain as well as thrive in much cooler year-round temperatures than Eastern indigos. However, in terms of a true display specimen and appreciation for intelligence in a reptile, indigos definitely rival. They are far more curious than a black milk and can sense your presence when entering MUCH quicker. When i enter my snake room it's only the Indigos that will almost immediately turn to look at me and actually acknowledge my immediate presence. Indigos are also an investment animal and command dedication in all areas of husbandry, while black milks will accept occasional food, a handling whenever convenient for you, and occasional spot-cleaning. Think of it being the difference between a real Corvette and a matchbox car -- good luck!
