Eastern indigos have been federally protected since 1975; FL Game and Fish declared them off-limits in 1979. I had the privilege of growing up in southern Orange Co. (FL) back when it was a herper's paradise; finding and keeping eastern indigos wasn't that big of a deal since they were plentiful and everyone I knew had at least one or two. But I digress .. bottom line is: Get caught with an indigo by the feds or Game and Fish and you had better start calling Melvin Belli or Johnny Cochran asap. To my knowledge, the eastern indigo was the first snake to be listed as threatened under the ESA (possibly the San Fran garter - correct me if I'm wrong), and is probably still the most recognizable herp on the list. Drive up to the sandhills in the Ocala Nat. Forest and catch a nice FL pine - they're big, put on a good display, as messy as an indigo and you can have 2 per household. 'nuff said.
: I live in Central Fl and I want to catch one for a pet.. Where could I find one? I live on 4 acers and there is a pond down the road, but I've checked under every log in my back yard and at the pond.. is there other places where they might be? thanks
