In Reply to: Another species of indigo, or a mate for my female???... posted by jason yanofsky on April 12, 2002 at 16:55:39:

: Hey all,

: I have a lone 3.5 foot female eastern indigo. I've contemplated breeding,
: but realize I may not have the time at the moment to dedicate to a fresh batch of neonates, if I was so blessed that is.
: Just wondering what some of the folks in the community would do. Get a juv. male for future breeding. Or take this time to diversify, and move into
: a different sud. species of Drymarchon, and get a male later when I'm ready.

: If so, which sub. species would it be?
: As a side note, I dig the Drymarchon C.C. friendly disposition, and would like to see that in my choice;)

: Anyone???

: thanks much,

: -jason

Jason,

You have indicated that you have a female indigo that is 3.5 ft in length. Your female won't be ready to breed for at least 2 years, probably more. To tell you what to do is hard. Breeding Easterns is easy, getting them to lay Viable eggs and getting those eggs to hatch and getting their offspring to eat...thats an entirely DIFFRENT matter in itself. Personaly, if I were you I would keep the female, and get a male, either a 2001 or 2002 male and then attempt breeding when the female is AT LEAST 6 ft in length and 4 years of age.Or, if you are NOT that enamoured with the Easterns, keep the female as a pet and get yourself a pair of Drymarchon corais erebennus(Texas Indigo) The temperament of these two snakes is similar, and the one that I had years ago was every bit as mellow as my largest Eastern Indigo"Cadillac" that I do school presentations with all the time.Texas Indigos are really neat and underappreciated snakes. Just a thought. It would be my first choice out of the Drymarchon group, hands down. It really depends on how badly you want to try your hand breeding. You have a shorter wait with the female you allready have if you pick up a male this year, either 2001 or 2002. But then...it really has to please you, that is what counts. I have quite a few snakes that I only have "1" of, and frankly, they are my favorites. Food for thought.............
