It's interesting that you note that about easterns, since this is apparently also the habit of erebennus, meaning the way they seem to hang out mostly along riparian corridors, even if the local water course is only seasonal.
It would make a lot of sense for gravid females to opt for a riverside underground laying site instead of their more usual upland hunting grounds that they frequent for the rest of the year. In doing so, babies would be born nearer water where there is greater abundance of small anuran prey suitable for their small size. As they get older they possibly get more and more independant from the proximity to aquatic habitats and so set up residence in drier habitats farther from water, only to return for laying purposes.
Oh well, just theorizing again....
