i have a pair that produced 3 yrs in a row
(96,97,98)
here's the short version:
both were 4 when breeding activity started, but it was the 5th year b4 any actual egg-laying occurred. breeding took place all 3 years the last week of December through the first couple weeks in Jan, after a short cool down period (i continued to feed, and they accepted.
bulk of the diet for both animals was frozen-thawed rats, but i also added f/t chicks, usally 2or 3 each per week. (they LOVE em)
first year she laid 6 eggs, 5 of which were fertile, and all 5 hatched.(2.3) i believe i was too high on temp, b/c 3 of the five had slight spinal
"kinks" (i had incubated at around 85 deg.)
second year she laid 7 eggs, only 4 were fertile.
i incubated much lower temp (around 78 deg) all 4 babies were perfect (2.2)
third year she laid 10 and 9 were fertile. i incubated again at about 78 deg and all nine hatched into perfect little gems (8.1)
interesting to note: it was common for all the eggs not to hatch at the same time, and as much as 2 weeks would somtimes go by bet. the first and last eggs hatching. i was of course pulling my hair out...but the one time i panicked and cut one of the eggs open a week after the first had hatched, it was underdeveloped! i managed to save it, and neve since cut another open.
i hope this helps, you can e-mail me at
