NJ is a crazy state. We need permits for just about every herp. NJ requires an exotic permit for african frogs ~ xenophus, pythons, albino corns (normals are endangered and banned), newts, salamanders, many native toads, hognose snakes, etc. Eastern Indigo snakes are included on that list.
The permit costs $10 a year for as many animals as you want_> $10 covers 1 african clawed frog or 50 of them plus 25 indigo snakes!
So basically NJ sees eastern indigos in the same light as fire belly newts! Some guys in state I talked to about the article thought it was unfair that NJ was mentioned because the state does not target easterns in their regulations...they target almost every herp spp. NJ could care less if you had 50 eastern indigos in your house...just as long as you pay your $10 a year you are fine! corn snakes are another story altogether! crazy huh? Kind of like PA...they are the most liberal state in the country for venomous and crocadillians (both outlawed in NJ) but touch a green snake or eastern box and you're in big trouble!
Some notable herp exemptions to the nj permit law include
eastern painters, anoles, BOA CONSTRICTORS!!!, snapping turtles, eastern garters...
