I would contribute that I have seen Gopher tortoises every time I go to Sanibel Island grazing beside the road at the Ding Darling Wildlife area there. On my last trip over I was pleased to find a golf-ball sized new little tortoise in a well populated area at the south end of the island, which would suggest they are able to survive and breed in an area that is very busy with auto traffic, development, etc. The Indigo is certainly found there although I've never seen one. I think that would be a good area to consider such a project. It's an island which makes it a fairly isolated population, it would be easier to track implanted individuals for study I would think, the residents there are very "wildlife friendly", they would probably embrace such a project, and it would be something you might even be able to get the cooperation from the wildlife refuge that is there for a small breeding facility/care center for injured Indigos. I can't think of a better place to do such a great project. The negative that comes to mind is the development and traffic but as I mentioned, the Gopher tortoise is still thriving there. Good luck- I love the idea!
