I direct a nature center that features a pair of Eastern Indigos (Chuck Elliott stock...great animals!) in addition to many other animals/herps. I take them with me all the time to schools and other groups as part of our wildlife education program. They are fantastic animals who are always the big hit...it is almost as if they look forward to coming out with me; very outgoing animals. I live near Chicago where it gets very cold yet transporting them is no problem. I just pack them in pillow cases and then place the pillow cases inside a small cooler (if it is real cold I will put a sock filled with rice and warmed in a microwave as a makeshift heat pad which warm the air; if you do this you must ventilate the cooler or else it will overheat....personally, as long as you get them inside relatively quickly you have nothing to worry about as these are very hardy animals). Of all the reptiles that I use for our outreach program the indigos are number one in my book; I would highly recommend this species as an educational animal.
: I'm trying to get a D.c.couperi as an educational animal for a zoo. Can I hear from others who are using these in educational programs? Do you take them out to schools all year round? How do you transport them? I'm in The South, but it can still get pretty chilly here in the winter.
