I use shavings, and truth be told my indigo consumes a small portion of his substrate when he devours his mice (same with my corn)...but to this day I have yet to have any problems with it (and Ive had my corn on this substrate for years now..and the indigo for ALMOST a year...plus clean up is a sinch!
