Ive never heard either of these rumors and seriously doubt any validity...Having been lucky enough to be born in the Republic of Texas and herped there for many years, I can tell you from personal experience that the Tx Indigo is highly variable in coloration...I caught snakes so black an Eastern would be proud and many with coloration so light anteriorly that you'd swear these animals could not be related...I don't think the locality had any bearing on it...You'd swear they were coachwhips on mega steroids....
: Does anyone know the history on cribos being released in South Texas by the government for rattlesnake controll. I've heard from other sources I dont consider as reliable that eastern indigos were released in Texas in a similar project. I have seen indigos from different localities that didn't have much black on them except on the tail. Some were actually quite light colored kind of straw on the head and neck. At the Lufkin zoo they had a trio that all three snakes were jet black no traces of a pattern, (these snakes were noticeably over fed so any pattern would have been visable) brown on the snout and sides of the head. Thanks in advance.
