I think the nature of a diurnual, day-hunting, large, active snake would tend to produce more intelligent snakes by natural selection.
They need to be aware, alert and somewhat intelliegent (for a snake!) to survive. They hunt more often than many snakes because of their high metabolism. Much more diffucult than, say, laying around a chipmunk path in ambush like a rattlesnake.
My indigos...like Fred said of his, are always very aware of me. The males especially, seem almost curious. As soon as I enter the snake room, their heads are peeking out to see what's up. This even when they are not eating (breeding season)...so I know they are not hoping for food.
I've worked with cobras...they seem very alert and aware also...and actually pretty similar to indigos (though more aggressive!) But...they are a lot like indigos in the wild...high metabolism, varied diet, active. Make sense they'd both end up more intelligent than most snakes.
