90% of the time it seems when I flip a log, rock, board, whatever, instead of herps, I find ANTS, lots of ANTS.

I'm no expert, and I haven't conducted any field studies, but it doesn't take but a little common sense and some experience trying to eliminate them from your yard to convince you that they must be responsible for the decimation of some native species. Maybe moreso than the expansion of suburbia and roadways.
