: i've got a pair of 2yr old easterns that i am considering breeding this year, i would like to hear from some of you guys or girls that have bred these for a few years for some advice. the male is about 5ft and the female about 4 1/2ft. any info will be greatly appreciated!
Ken,
I undoubtedly would have to agree with both Chuck Elliot and Doug. Usually when you breed snakes early, what you get is eggbinding, or infertile eggs. I've seen this happen with ahet for albino hognose this year. The guy who owned them was in a rush to recoup his investment by producing albinos, so he bred them early before they had attained suffecient size and girth to form viable eggs and not get egg bound. The end result... He got 5 eggs, instead of the12+ he would have got if he had waited another season and out of those eggs, three went bad immediately. Two did hatch, but look normal and are possible hets! So much for recouping losses this year!! My advice is take your time and get them up to size, Indigos are hard enough to produce without increasing your chance of failure or eggbinding by breeding to early. Best of luck with your Indigos.
