Notwithstanding your concerns for a theft, you'll have to assume the snake escaped. I had the same situation several years ago. My recommendation is to get everything off the floor. They tend to crawl into somewhere dark on the floor and stay put for awhile. When I lost mine, I ended up tearing the house apart and finding nothing. Two weeks later I had the front door open for some air while I was watching TV. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something move on the front patio. There was my indigo headed back toward the house. I literally opened the door and he crawled back inside. I've heard of things like this happening to several other people so if at all possible be sure and keep the house closed up tight. Thank god the concept of a "home range" isn't lost on captives. At about five feet long, there's only so many places it could be if it's still in the house but as we all know, they are capable of coiling up into some pretty amazingly small spots.
My snakes have always been active in the morning, so my recommendation would be to turn on all the lights in the house early each day and perhaps he'll make his appearance before work one morning.
As it relates to your "friends," good luck. Just put the word out especially at the reptile specialty stores in your area, five foot indigo snakes don't just "show up" in someone's collection.
