I think it may be possible. If the gap is 2" that is probably enough room. My CB 00 male indigo escaped twice. The first time was my fault (Didn't secure lid, Dangit!) I secured the top with several pieces of velcro strap to hold top on. He managed to work the lid to have about 3/4" play. He had no problem getting through that. Foul play may be it too, but I would assume for a while he is hiding in the house somewhere. Do a thorough search of your house, closets, cabinets, behind washer/oven/fridge etc. Look everyday. I also placed boxes along the edge of the wall around the house for hide boxes. He won't be very active at night, but will probably move around. Hope this helps and Good Luck, I hope he turns up. I was just sick about the idea of losing my Indigo....Where abouts in So. Cal are you?
