: I was told she was eating aggressively. She has not eaten for me yet, but I only got her home Sunday. Generally, that wouldn't worry me at all, but reading some of your non-eater posts makes me think about it. She is awesome. Although she is a black chin, she has red chin genetics. I am thinking about picking a male up for her at the IRBA this weekend. Also, just holding my breath a little until she eats for me(the individual I got her from is very reliable, but still just a little worried she might not eat for me.)
: Anyway, I have been a lurker on this Indigo sight for quite a while, but I am stoked to be an Indigo owner now. Wanted one ever since I was young.
Jim,
Glad to hear that you finally purchased the snake your really wanted. I know how that feels.
The thing that you might want to keep in mind about Eastern Indigos is that when they are young, they are very picky, selective and hesitant feeders. Often, out of any given clutch, I will have 2 or 3 that start eating right away, and the rest take upwards of 3 months to even accept a meal.
Keep in mind that the change to a new household, new temp gradients, new cageing, can set back the process of haveing these neonate snakes feeding voluntarily, as will repeated handleing. I would not panic at all that your female has not eaten, just give her the correct temps, DONT put her in a large container, and dont handle her for a while to alow her to acclimate to your set-up. Snakes can go a LONG time without food, three, even four months, with no dire effects. Patience is the quality you will need most now. These are living animals, not machines, and they exist on their timetable, not ours. I will be at the San diego I.R.B.A. reptile show this weekend also, come drop by my booth, renegade Reptiles and we can talk.
Congrats,
Fred Albury
