Indigo snakes were originally lumped into Genus
"Coluber" (the racers) and then changed to Genus Spilotes (the tropical "rat" snakes) before the new genus Drymarchon was created. They seem to share more characteristics with these two genera
(especially coluber) than any other, but are certainly their own genus.
