: Ihave a pair of easter indigoes, the male is 5ft and the female is 4.5ft do you think i could try and breed them at the end of the year,or are they still to small, they were captive bred in 98
: regards Steve
Dear Steve,
First I would like to congratulate you on your selection of snakes. E. Indigos are magnificent snakes that have an aura all their own.
Secondly, I would like to answer your question.
Steve, if you want any real degree of success with your two snakes, I would wait until the female is at least 6 ft in length. By that time the male shoul/may be about 6 ft long himself or longer. These sizes are ideal. The fact that they were hatched in 98' means absolutely nothing when it comes to successful reproduction. If you attempt it earlier, you risk haveing the female get eggbound and requireing vetrenarian surgical intervention to remove the eggs from her.
This also can ruin her as a prospective future breeder as well. Frankly, not worth the risk.
Eastern indigos are not like most colubrids in that they cannot be rushed to breeding age without dire consequences to the snake and/or eggs.
Take your time, feed her well for the next year, and IF she is up to size in 2001, then attempt to breed her then. The older and larger she is, the better your results are going to be with her reproduction(Within reason, not TOO old)
If you pickup the August issue of Reptile&Amphibian magazine, you can read my article on Indigos. Or you can go to my webpage at renegadereptiles.com . If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me and ask them.
Good luck,
Fred
